Scope of practice
- Members provide intimate hygiene and welfare-monitoring services only. They do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, or carry out any act of veterinary surgery.
- Members maintain clear boundaries with veterinary care and work alongside, never in place of, veterinary surgeons.
Safe, hygienic practice
- Clean, appropriate equipment is used for every horse, with hand hygiene, single-use consumables where appropriate, and safe disposal.
- If a member is ever unsure, or suspects a potential abnormality, they advise the owner to seek a veterinary referral and record that they have done so.
- Members keep appropriate, confidential records of their visits.
Professional standards
- Members provide a recognised diploma or veterinary qualification (or a recognised equivalent) and evidence of current insurance, and renew their insurance certificate with the Federation annually.
- Members undertake ongoing CPD as a core part of professional responsibility.
- Members act honestly, represent their qualifications and Federation membership accurately, and treat owners, horses and colleagues with respect.
- Members explain their service and its limits to owners, and never imply that they can diagnose or treat.
- Members cooperate fully with the Federation's review and complaints process.
Members who do not meet these standards may have their listing reviewed and, where appropriate, removed.
